5-star licensed breeder

Cheristone Doodles is proud to have achieved a 5-star rating from Somerset Council. We work diligently to give our dogs and puppies the best lives and achieve the highest standards laid out by the Animal Welfare Act 2018.

Our licence number is 000092 from March 2025.

I found the arrangements in place to be excellent for ensuring animal welfare. The animals are kept in conditions in line with the Five Freedoms, accurate records are kept of each animal, appropriate health screens are being undertaken, and procedures are followed for ensuring excellent hygiene and safety.

WHAT IS THE ANIMAL WELFARE ACT 2018?

Legislation requiring businesses involving animals to obtain a licence to show they are meeting the welfare needs of the animals in their care and conducting their activities appropriately.

The Act makes it law that most individuals breeding puppies should have a breeding licence issued by their local Council, irrespective of the number of litters produced per year. If someone breeding puppies doesn't have a licence, they may well be breaking the law.

WHAT DO LICENCE HOLDERS HAVE TO DO?

  • Meet all the standard welfare requirements to achieve a maximum of 3 stars

  • Meet higher standards to achieve a maximum of 5 stars

  • Pass regular inspections

  • Display their licence number on website and premises for people to see

You have met every condition and all the required higher standards, this is how you have obtained the highest level of stars that were achievable.

AVOIDING PUPPY-FARMS

Licence holders are proud to have achieved the high standards demanded by the licensing criteria, so if their licence number or certificate isn’t available, this should ring alarm bells to a puppy-buyer.
